UNIVERSITAS PGRI SEMARANG
SCHOOL PROFILE
1. HISTORY
Universitas PGRI
Semarang was established by the Regional Leadership Council Level I of PGRI
Central Java Province through the Education Institution Development Foundation
(YPLP) of IKIP PGRI Central Java and is a transformation from IKIP PGRI
Semarang along with Semarang Technology Academy. The purpose of its
establishment is to prepare outstanding leaders with a national character who
can serve as role models in the life of the nation and state in achieving the
welfare of all Indonesian people. Throughout its development history, the
journey of Universitas PGRI Semarang can be divided into five major periods.
The first period
is the institutional initiation period (1981-1986). This period is marked by
the establishment of IKIP PGRI Central Java on July 23, 1981, by the Regional
Leadership Council Level I of PGRI Central Java Province under the leadership
of Drs. Is Riwidigdo. Some of its founding figures include Taruna, S.H.; Drs.
Is Riwidigdo; Drs. Karseno; Drs. R. Antonius Supardi Hadiatmodjo; Drs. Muhamad
Oemar; Drs. Thomas Sabar Adiutomo; Drs. Abdul Latief Nawawi S.H.; Drs.
Soeparjo; Mrs. Widayati Sumiyatun Soeharto; and Drs. Teddy Iskandi. Through
Minister of Education Decree No. 0395/0/1984, IKIP PGRI Central Java changed
its name to STKIP PGRI Central Java.
The second period
is the institutional development period (1987-1992). During this period, under
the leadership of Rector Taruna, S.H., STKIP PGRI Central Java changed its name
to IKIP PGRI Semarang.
The third period
is the academic development period (1993-1997). In this period, under the
leadership of Rector Prof. Drs. Satmoko, the main focus was on improving the
quality of lecturers through advanced study programs. The academic development
process was perfected during the leadership of Prof. Drs. Sugijono, M.Sc.
(1997-2001), who introduced six study programs: Indonesian Language and
Literature Education (PBSI), English Language Education (PBI), Mathematics
Education (Pend. Mat), Educational Psychology and Guidance (PPB), Pancasila and
Citizenship Education (PPKn), and Biology Education (Pend. Bio). These six
study programs were submitted to the National Accreditation Board for Higher
Education (BAN PT) and received a B accreditation.
The fourth period
is the development period (2001-2009). Under the leadership of Rector Dr.
Sulistiyo, M.Pd., IKIP PGRI Semarang, which was once proposed to become a
university, solidified its stance to maintain its status as an IKIP. The
euphoria among various higher education institutions to change their names
actually made IKIP PGRI Semarang focus more on being an institution that
produces educational personnel. During this time, a sharp increase was seen
with IKIP PGRI Semarang ranking among the top five private universities most
preferred by prospective students.
Still in this
period, due to the significant shortage of teachers, especially for
kindergarten and elementary school, in 2003, IKIP PGRI Semarang opened a D-2
Teacher Education program for Kindergarten (PGTK), and in 2004, it opened a D-2
Teacher Education program for Elementary School (PGSD). In 2009, the PGSD D-2
program was upgraded to the S-1 level, and the PGTK D-2 program was upgraded to
S-1 under the name Early Childhood Education (PAUD). Furthermore, to support
the Central Java Governor's program on Javanese language as a local content
subject, IKIP PGRI Semarang also developed a study program in Javanese Language
and Literature Education.
The fifth period
(2009-present) emphasizes character education. During this period, IKIP PGRI
Semarang, under the leadership of Rector Dr. Muhdi, S.H. M.Hum., continues to
promote character education learning methods among students. Various activities
to implement character education have been actively promoted during this
period. In this period, the Semarang Technology Academy (ATS), established in
1979 under the management of YPLP PT PGRI Semarang, was merged into IKIP PGRI
Semarang. Subsequently, on April 17, 2014, through Minister of Education Decree
No. 143/P/2014, the merger of IKIP PGRI Semarang with ATS was established as
Universitas PGRI Semarang, which now offers 2 master's programs, 13
undergraduate education programs, 7 engineering undergraduate programs, and 3
diploma engineering programs.
