2nd week in Indonesia

  • October 7, 2024

Today, I observed Grade 5B, where the teacher was teaching Indonesian. The atmosphere in the classroom was quite surprising, as it was completely different from any classroom I have experienced before. The environment was neither tense nor restrictive; on the contrary, the students were free to express themselves and actively engage in various activities. Despite this relaxed atmosphere, what stood out to me was that the students remained diligent and well-behaved, consistently completing their tasks effectively. I was truly impressed by their self-discipline and eagerness to learn.

After the lesson, we proceeded to the university's main office. Later, the group and I went to a wonderful restaurant for lunch. I ordered a Japanese dish, which was absolutely delicious. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared, and the rich flavors left me feeling extremely satisfied.

Today, we continued observing more lessons. First, we attended a citizenship education class, followed by a dance class where the students were learning the Biring Manggis and Kicir Kicir dances. I was particularly impressed by the students' energy and enthusiasm in the dance class. Although not everyone could perform the dance perfectly on the first try, they were confident, joyful, and eager to give their best effort.

After the lessons, we moved to the university's main office. A minor incident occurred with one of our group members, but the buddies were very helpful, assisting us greatly and handling the situation promptly and thoughtfully, which made us feel more at ease.

At lunchtime, we went to the school canteen, where the food was excellent. I felt like I was experiencing the local cuisine, which was quite different from the familiar foods I enjoy back home.

In the evening, I went with Jack and Anna to a local restaurant for rice. This place reminded me of Vietnam, as it resembled a rice shop near my school. The food was affordable yet delicious—satisfying but not overly expensive. The familiarity of the experience made me feel comfortable and happy.

Over these two days, we continued observing various lessons. The math and art classes were both engaging and creative, which made me excited to learn new things. The students were highly focused and displayed a positive attitude toward learning.

Our group also began preparing for the upcoming teaching practice session. Although the schedule was quite busy, everyone remained enthusiastic and eager to share their experiences and teaching methods, which made it a very productive and collaborative time.

Today marked the teaching practice session for Ja and Helen with Grade 2B. Both of them performed exceptionally well, effectively delivering their lessons and engaging the students throughout the class. Their teaching methods were clear and organized, creating a positive and interactive learning environment for the students.

In the evening, Helen and I went out to try a local dish called Bakso. It was a new and unique experience for me, as the flavors were quite different from what I'm used to. The dish came with a variety of toppings, which made it both interesting and very filling. I was completely satisfied and quite full after the meal.

  • Friday

Today, we worked in the functional room at the school to prepare lesson plans for the upcoming classes. Since it was Friday, we were allowed to leave early, but before heading out, we made sure to finish all our tasks.

Afterward, I went shopping with Helen, Anna, and Ja at Super Mall. It is a vibrant shopping center with many fashion stores and interesting items. We had a wonderful time exploring the mall and buying clothes that we liked. Shopping with friends is always an enjoyable experience—not only because of the new things we bought but also because it creates lasting memories.
