Last week in Indonesia

Today, we rehearsed for the cultural performance scheduled for tomorrow. Everyone was excited to prepare, and although there was some nervousness, it was an enjoyable experience.

  • Tuesday

In the morning, we arrived at school early to prepare for the performance. The buddy students helped us with our makeup and hair styling; they were very skilled, which made us feel much more confident. In the afternoon, we all went together to buy souvenirs at the Batik store. Each of us selected small but meaningful items to bring back as keepsakes.

Today, we had an interesting cultural exchange session with Grade 5B. I taught the students how to say "Good morning," "Good afternoon," "Good evening," and "Good night" in Vietnamese. For example, I taught them how to say "Selamat Pagi" (Good morning) in Indonesian and its Vietnamese equivalent "Chào buổi sáng," "Selamat Siang" (Good afternoon) to "Chào buổi trưa," "Selamat Malam" (Good evening) to "Chào buổi tối," and "Selamat Tidur" (Good night) to "Chúc ngủ ngon" in Vietnamese. The students were very excited to learn Vietnamese, and they also taught us how to count in the Java language. Moreover, they kindly shared with us the snacks they had bought for lunch, which made the cultural exchange even more intimate and heartwarming. This was truly a wonderful and unforgettable experience, and I have grown very fond of the students here.

In the afternoon, Helen, Anna, and I had our own teaching rehearsals. However, due to an unexpected power outage, Anna's lesson had to be canceled. Nevertheless, Helen and I continued with our lessons, although it was a bit challenging since most of our lessons were prepared using PowerPoint. Fortunately, we managed to complete the lessons successfully.

In the evening, we all attended a farewell party with the members of the International Office and our buddy students at Anetos Coffee and Brunch. The atmosphere was warm and friendly.

Today was our last day at the elementary school. Early in the morning, Mr. Wawan welcomed us. This time, we no longer needed to prepare lessons in the functional room or observe classes; instead, we sat in a meeting room to discuss the Sea Teacher program. When we went outside to take photos, many students surrounded us, giving us numerous souvenirs. We hugged each other, not wanting to part. These moments were so moving that they are hard to describe in words. I truly love the students here. When we got on the bus to leave the school, the students ran to see us off, and I couldn’t hold back my emotions as tears streamed down my face.

Afterward, we went to the main office of UPGRIS, where the principal personally handed each of us a certificate from the school and put the UPGRIS shirt on us as a congratulatory gesture.

In the afternoon, our group from Vietnam went to the school and gave gifts to our Buddies as a heartfelt thank you for their support during the past period.

In the evening, we had a cozy dinner with our buddy students, chatting and sharing wonderful memories from our time here.

At noon, Ms. Candra came to our dorm and gave each of us a Batik shirt. It was a gift from Ms. Candra and Mr. Taufiq. In the afternoon, we went out for a meal with Mr. Wawan and his wife, Ms. Ayu. Mr. Wawan even drew a picture for us, which he then printed on a mug as a souvenir. In the evening, when we returned to the dorm, we gathered together to enjoy our last evening before the Vietnamese group would depart for home.

Dinner

  • Sunday

Early in the morning, our friends from the Philippines woke up to see us off. Chris waited for us under the dormitory, together with Jack. After that, Inna and Linda arrived, and both of them escorted us to the airport. Inna gave each of us a letter she had written. We had a long wait at the airport, from check-in to passing through security, but Inna and Linda stayed to wait for us. When I saw them, I was truly surprised. We waved goodbye to each other, repeatedly telling one another not to cry, although it seemed like Inna had already cried.
